Biography
Daughter of Captain John Jan Conklin, a Poughkeepsie militia commander and landowner of about 1,700 acres on the Hudson River. Both families initially opposed the match, so Henry Sr. and Susannah eloped in 1742. After their marriage, Captain Conklin was reconciled and sold the couple the house in which they lived.
