Biography

Fourth child and first son of Gilbert 'Hubertus' Livingston and Cornelia Beekman. A physician who moved to Poughkeepsie from Kingston and married Susannah Storm Conklin in 1742. Held the clerkship of Dutchess County for life by grant — serving as County Clerk from 1742 to 1789 (his name appears on documents as early as 1737), roughly 52 years. A Whig of the Revolution and a member of the New York Provincial Assembly from Dutchess County for many years. Acquired the Locust Grove property in 1751 and gave it to his son Henry Livingston Jr. on his 1771 marriage; also built The Pynes (1761) in Tivoli and Callendar House / 'Sunning Hill' (1794). Went blind in his later years, and his son Robert Henry took over the Clerk duties. (Consolidated from a duplicate entry formerly titled 'Henry "Hendrick" Livingston Sr.')
