Revolutionary War officer; poet; claimed author of 'A Visit from St. Nicholas' (Night Before Christmas)

Biography

Son of Henry Livingston Sr. and Susannah Conklin, born in Poughkeepsie. Major in the Continental Army who joined the invasion of Canada under General Montgomery in 1775. After the war, held civilian posts including commissioner of sequestration and Justice of the Peace. Published extensively as a poet in newspapers and periodicals under pseudonyms. His family maintained he was the true author of 'A Visit from St. Nicholas' (commonly attributed to Clement Clarke Moore). Literary analyst Don Foster argued for Livingston's authorship in his 2000 book 'Author Unknown.'
