Biography
Julia Ursin Niemcewicz Kean was born in 1816, the daughter of Peter Philip James Kean and Sarah Sabina Morris. Through her father she was the granddaughter of John Kean (1756–1795) and Susan Livingston (1759–1853), making her a great-granddaughter of Governor William Livingston of New Jersey. She married Hamilton Fish on 15 December 1836 near Elizabeth, New Jersey. She served as First Lady of New York during her husband's 1849–50 governorship and presided over the Fish household during his long tenure as Secretary of State under President Grant (1869–1877). The couple had three sons and five daughters.
