Biography
Born 24 June 1851 in New York City, son of Secretary of State Hamilton Fish (1808–1893) and Julia Kean Fish (1816–1887). Columbia College graduate, member of St. Anthony Hall. As President of the Illinois Central Railroad (1887–1906) he oversaw the railroad's greatest expansion. Removed in 1906 by E.H. Harriman amid the Mutual Life Insurance scandal (and rumored society feuds involving his wife). Married Marion Graves Anthon ('Mamie') on 1 June 1876; four children. With Mamie built 'Crossways' in Newport and the landmark Stanford White-designed Stuyvesant Fish House on Gramercy Park in Manhattan. Collected Italian primitives, Renaissance sculpture, and Louis XVI decorative arts.
