Biography

Born 27 February 1862 at Liberty Hall, Union, New Jersey, younger son of Congressman John Kean (1814–1895) and Lucinetta Halsted. Named after his great-uncle Hamilton Fish. Educated at St. Paul's School. A successful New York banker and Republican political operative, he served one term as U.S. Senator from New Jersey (1929–1935). Married Katharine Taylor Winthrop of the Winthrop dynasty in 1888. Father of U.S. Congressman Robert Winthrop Kean (1893–1980) and grandfather of Governor Thomas Howard Kean of New Jersey (b. 1935), making him a key patriarch of the modern Kean political dynasty.
