Biography

Herman Thong Livingston (June 12, 1827 – October 20, 1899). Born at Oak Hill, Columbia County, New York. Son of Herman Livingston (1793–1872) and Sarah 'Sally' Lawrence Hallett (c. 1797–1852). Married December 6, 1853 to Susan Bard Rogers, daughter of Archibald Rogers and Anna Pendleton of Hyde Park — the Rogers family were close friends of the Roosevelts and Vanderbilts of Hyde Park. Owned and lived at the Oak Hill estate. Republican. Episcopalian. Active in Columbia County civic life. Six children: Herman Thong Livingston (1856–1936, inherited Oak Hill), Edmund Pendleton Livingston (1857–1888, died young), John Callendar Livingston (b. 1862), Anna Pendleton Livingston (b. 1866), Archibald Livingston (b. 1868), and Sarah Livingston (b. 1871). The 'Thong' or 'Tong' middle name traces back to Maria Thong, wife of Robert Livingston 3rd Lord of the Manor. Buried at Linlithgo Reformed Church Cemetery.
