Biography

Herman Livingston (August 2, 1793 – May 9, 1872). Fifth son of John Livingston of Oak Hill (1749–1822) and his first wife Mary Ann LeRoy (1759–1797). Born at Claverack, Columbia County, NY. Inherited and enlarged the Oak Hill estate built by his father in 1793 — the estate would remain in Livingston hands through four more generations of direct descendants until 1997. A wealthy Hudson River landowner, his son Herman Thong Livingston (1827–1899) and grandson Herman Thong Livingston (1856–1936) both owned Oak Hill. The middle name 'Thong' (from Robert 3rd Lord's wife Maria Thong) recurs in this direct line. Direct-line ancestor of Edmund Pendleton Livingston (1889–1972), Brendan Tobin's great-grandfather.
