Marion "Mamie" Graves Anthon Fish (1853–1915)

1853–1915

Gilded Age society hostess; queen of Newport society

Biography

Daughter of William Henry Anthon, a prominent New York lawyer. Nearly illiterate by her own admission, but became one of the three most powerful hostesses of the Gilded Age (alongside Caroline Astor and Tessie Oelrichs). Married Stuyvesant Fish 1 June 1876. Her annual Harvest Festival Ball at 'Crossways' in Newport signaled the end of the summer social season. Famed for her wit, sharp tongue, and disregard for social niceties — once allegedly snubbed Mrs. E.H. Harriman from a tea party, indirectly contributing to her husband's ouster from the Illinois Central. Commissioned Stanford White to design the Stuyvesant Fish House (1897–1900) at 25 East 78th Street. Four children.
