Chancellor Robert R. Livingston

Biography

Robert R. Livingston, known as "The Chancellor," was one of the most consequential Livingstons. He served on the Committee of Five that drafted the Declaration of Independence, and as Chancellor of New York he administered the presidential oath to George Washington in 1789.

As U.S. Minister to France, he negotiated the Louisiana Purchase with Napoleon in 1803, doubling the size of the United States. He also partnered with Robert Fulton to develop the first commercially successful steamboat, which sailed the Hudson River past the family's Clermont estate.
