Robert Livingston the Elder, 1st Lord of the Manor
1654–1728
Biography
Robert Livingston arrived in the colony of New York in 1673 as a young Scotsman fluent in Dutch, a rare advantage in the polyglot Hudson Valley. Through strategic marriages, shrewd land deals, and political alliances, he assembled what became Livingston Manor: a 160,000-acre royal patent stretching across what is now Columbia County.
As Secretary of Indian Affairs and a member of the Provincial Assembly, he wielded influence that extended far beyond his estate. His marriage to Alida Schuyler, widow of Domine Nicholas Van Rensselaer, connected him to two of the most powerful families in colonial New York and cemented the Livingston name among the Hudson Valley aristocracy.
