John Livingston
1603–1672
Church of Scotland (Presbyterian) minister; Covenanter preacher
Biography
Rev. John Livingstone (21 June 1603 – August 1672), a prominent Scottish Covenanter preacher remembered for the revival sermon at the Kirk of Shotts (1630). He ministered at Killinchy in Ireland and later at Ancrum, Scotland. A supporter of the Covenant who sided with the Parliamentary/Cromwellian cause, he refused the oath of allegiance to Charles II after the Restoration and was exiled in 1663, settling in Rotterdam, where he served the Scots congregation until his death in 1672. Father of Robert Livingston the Elder, 1st Lord of Livingston Manor; descended from the line of the Lords Livingston (ancestors of the Earls of Linlithgow and Callendar). CORRECTION: family oral history described him as a 'Catholic priest' exiled during Church of England conflicts — he was in fact a Presbyterian minister exiled for resisting Episcopacy, not a Catholic priest. No Find A Grave memorial was located for him (died in Rotterdam).
