1716–1778

Biography

Philip Livingston was a prosperous New York merchant and one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. A grandson of Robert Livingston the Elder, he represented New York in the Continental Congress and was a leading voice for independence among the colonial elite.

His wealth and social standing lent crucial credibility to the revolutionary cause among New York's powerful merchant class. He died during the Congress's session in York, Pennsylvania, in 1778, one of only two signers to die before the war's end.
