Biography
Great-grandson of Peter Stuyvesant, the last Dutch director-general of New Netherland, through Peter's son Nicholas Stuyvesant (1648–1698) and grandson Gerardus Stuyvesant (1691–1777). Inherited large Manhattan estates (the Stuyvesant Bowery farm). Married Margaret Livingston (1738–1818) in New York City, merging the two most prominent pre-Revolutionary New York land-owning families — the English-Scottish Livingstons of the Hudson Valley and the Dutch Stuyvesants of Manhattan. Father of Elizabeth Stuyvesant (1775–1854), who married Col. Nicholas Fish; grandfather of Secretary of State Hamilton Fish.
