Margaret Livingston Stuyvesant (1738–1818)
1738–1818
Wife of Petrus Stuyvesant; mother of Elizabeth Stuyvesant Fish; Livingston-Stuyvesant connector
Biography
A Livingston daughter of the colonial generation who married Petrus Stuyvesant (1727–1805), great-grandson of Peter Stuyvesant, the last Dutch director-general of New Netherland. Through this marriage the Livingston family was directly linked to the old Dutch Stuyvesant aristocracy. Her daughter Elizabeth Stuyvesant (1775–1854) married Col. Nicholas Fish and became the mother of Secretary of State Hamilton Fish. Margaret's exact Livingston parentage is debated among genealogists — she is most often identified as a daughter of Robert Gilbert Livingston (1712–1789) and Catherine McPheadres, but primary sources vary; see family trees at Geneanet (tdowling).
