Revolutionary War officer; New York Federalist politician; father of Hamilton Fish

Biography

Nicholas Fish was a Continental Army officer and close friend of Alexander Hamilton. As major of the 2nd New York Regiment, he took part in the Yorktown Campaign that resulted in Cornwallis's surrender in 1781. After the war he was Adjutant General of New York and a leading Federalist politician. On 30 June 1803 he married Elizabeth Stuyvesant (1775–1854), a great-great-granddaughter of New Amsterdam Governor Peter Stuyvesant. They named their son Hamilton Fish (1808–1893) — future Governor of New York and U.S. Secretary of State — after Nicholas's old comrade.
