Biography

Born 4 December 1852 at Liberty Hall (now Kean University campus), Union, New Jersey, the elder son of Congressman John Kean (1814–1895) and Lucinetta 'Lucy' Halsted. Great-grandson of John Kean of the Continental Congress and great-nephew of Secretary of State Hamilton Fish. Graduated Yale College and Columbia Law School (1875). Served two terms in the U.S. House (1883–85, 1887–89) and two terms as U.S. Senator (1899–1911). Brother of Senator Hamilton Fish Kean; great-uncle of Governor Thomas Kean. Married Lucy Halsted Kean's niece Lucy Halsted Kean's cousin — actually remained unmarried, no direct issue.
