Biography
Born 21 April 1935 in New York City, the son of Congressman Robert Winthrop Kean and Elizabeth Stuyvesant Howard. Educated at St. Mark's School, Princeton (B.A., 1957), and Columbia (M.A.). Republican member of the New Jersey General Assembly (1967–1977, Speaker 1972–73). Elected the 48th Governor of New Jersey in 1981 and re-elected in 1985 with 70% of the vote. After leaving office, served as President of Drew University (1990–2005) and as Chair of the 9/11 Commission (2002–2004). Married Deborah Bye in 1967; three children including former Congressman Tom Kean Jr. Direct descendant of Col. John Kean of the Continental Congress, Governor William Livingston of New Jersey, and Secretary of State Hamilton Fish — arguably the single most politically credentialed living descendant of the Livingston family.
