Biography
Studied law under Gilbert Livingston (1742–1806) and became his law partner, eventually marrying Gilbert's daughter Sarah. After Sarah's death, he married her first cousin Elizabeth (daughter of Henry Livingston Jr.). Was Secretary of the Navy under President Monroe and was appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1823, serving until his death in 1843.
