Margaret Beekman Livingston (b. 1782)

b. 1782

Only surviving daughter of Henry Beekman Livingston "the Black Sheep" and Anne Hume Shippen

Biography

The single surviving child of Col. Henry Beekman Livingston (1750–1831) and Anne Hume "Nancy" Shippen (1763–1841), born 1782 before the couple separated in 1783 due to Henry's notoriously violent temper (his volatile nature earned him the nickname 'the Black Sheep' of the Livingston clan). Her mother's diary, Nancy Shippen, Her Journal (published 1935), chronicles the unhappy marriage. Despite Henry's estrangement from his wife, he maintained contact with his daughter. Named for her paternal grandmother Margaret Beekman, matriarch of Clermont. Philip Beekman Livingston, a son of Henry and Anne who is sometimes listed in genealogies, appears to have died young or been conflated with other Livingston relatives.
