Biography
Born Marie Louise Madeleine Valentine D'Avezac de Castera in Saint-Domingue (modern Haiti). Daughter of a wealthy sugar planter. Fled to New Orleans as a refugee from the Haitian Revolution. She married first Monsieur Moreau de Lassy, and after his death, married Edward Livingston in June 1805 when she was 19. She is said to have greatly influenced her husband's political career. Sister of Auguste Davezac, who served twice as U.S. Minister to the Netherlands.
