Biography

Charles Tidyman Lowndes was a Charleston, South Carolina rice planter and merchant. He was the son of William Lowndes (1782–1822), the Congressman who gave his name to Lowndes County, and nephew of Thomas Lowndes. His 1831 marriage to Gertrude Laura Livingston, daughter of Judge Maturin Livingston, allied the Lowndes planter dynasty with the Hudson Valley Livingstons. He survived the Civil War and lived to 1885.
