Biography
Inventor and engineer who developed the first commercially successful steamboat, the North River Steamboat (often called the Clermont), in partnership with Chancellor Robert R. Livingston. Married Harriet Livingston, daughter of Walter Livingston and niece of the Chancellor. The steamboat enterprise was a key collaboration between Fulton's engineering genius and the Livingston family's political influence and monopoly rights on the Hudson River.
