Biography
Edwin Hoyt was a prominent New York City dry-goods merchant of the mid-19th century. He was a partner in Hoyt, Sprague & Co., one of the major wholesale textile firms connecting southern cotton to northern mills. In 1846 he married Blanche Geraldine Livingston, youngest daughter of Judge Maturin Livingston. He died in 1874, leaving his widow as heir to both the Hoyt mercantile fortune and Staatsburgh Livingston interests.
